Hello all,

My folks own a couple of large spider lilies (5-ish feet in diameter.) They are moving cross country soon, and are using a POD, in which the lilies will be shipped. The plants will be in the pod for about two weeks. How should we go about preparing the plants? Potted/unpotted? Watered/dry? Trimmed/untrimmed? Full plant/trimming down to the pods?

I've been googling for a couple hours now and have only found info about moving/shipping plants over the course of a couple days or storing lily bulbs for the whole winter. But what would be the best way to ship them over two weeks?

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Spider!
Dig and clean as much of the existing soil away from the roots....trim any dead roots and top growth. They should be dormant at this time of the year. You can either pot them up, or use lined cardboard boxes.
Potting them up, or boxing them: using peat moss would be best...the peat ( lightly moisten) will stay moist for the 2 weeks, and will be a lot lighter then using potting soil.
Let us know how it goes!

As for the lilies, potting them is still a good idea for stability. However, advancements in plant shipping methods now allow for longer transit times. Ensure the soil is slightly moist, not saturated, and trim any excessive foliage to reduce stress.

Consider using plant-friendly packaging materials like eco-friendly bubble wrap or plant sleeves. These can provide an extra layer of protection during the two-week journey. Label the boxes clearly, emphasizing their sensitivity to sunlight and the need for gentle handling.
