Hi Joe! You're in good company with a bunch of gardening geeks who like to play around on computers too. I'm in Texas, and I like hanging out outside too, but around this time of the year, it gets too dang hot to stay out for very long...95 degree temps are pretty much the norm for her this...

I thought "Firebird" has dark burgundy colored leaves. Am I wrong?

I think they do well in part shade, too. They shouldn't be watered very often once you plant them, and make sure to water down by the bottom leaves and not in the center of the plant. That will make it rot. They don't like moist or wet soil at all, so be sure to allow the soil to dry out...

That probably would have been okay if you had brought them into a warmer place. Typically, I think that your Ohio winters are too cold to keep cannas outside.
Even in zone 8, I put a heavy layer of mulch over mine. You never know whether you're going to have a really adverser winter -- even in...

Not a good idea. For one thing, the container isn't that big and your tomato plant is going to grow deep roots and they will take up all of the space in that container. If you tried to plant one in the top (and there isn't much of an opening so it would be harder than it is to water them,) you...

Oh man! I feel for you my friend! The same thing happened to me on several occasions. I think the first year I had my Russian Reds, the leaf rollers practically chewed them to the ground.
I found a great product at HEB that I use on everything, and it's organic. The active ingredient in it is...

Miracle Gro is supposed to be nutrients to make plants grow....but the nutrients aren't derived from NATURAL or non-chemical sources. If you want to go organic, use something like composted manure, well rotted leaf mulch, fish emulsion, fish carcasses, bone meal or any of the countless other...

I have two growing right now. I removed as much of the lower leaves as I could before I set them to dry. Then I put mine in water, changing the water every other day or so, and again, when the area softened, I removed more of the leaves. I kept it in the water for quite a while until it had...

I can't say for sure, but I kind of agree....the flowers look a bit like some Magnolia flowers that my mom has...Hers are pink, and the bush is obviously a different type of magnolia, but the shape of the flowers is quite similar. I am surprised there are flowers and no leaves. The leaves on...

I think the Alaska nasturtiums are characterized by variegated foliage. The flowers aren't all orange, but they aren't a "scarlet" red per se either.....They are very cool nasturtiums, though....
Did you all know that they are supposed to repel rabbits and other critters?

Nope...not here in Central Texas. As a matter of fact, we've got the opposite problem. You may be saying "rain rain, go away," but I am saying "come and visit me today." We are in an extreme drought, and it hasn't let up since 2007. During the spring of 2006, we had too much rain, and that was...

Walmart was selling them for about $2.50 a piece. You may want to get a smaller one because I seriously doubt that they will be hardy enough to come back each year if you keep them in the ground. Most EE's aren't hardy in the ground to zones colder than zone 7.

So glad you found us!
Susy, I'm so glad you found us! You will find your prayer angels here. It's a real nice site, and it's a lot like the old one! I hope you are doing well. I know that you've been through an awful time, and just as we were here for you as prayer angels, we will be here for...

Nope, my Russian Red cannas are just starting to come up and the hibiscus are coming right along, and Rose of Sharon's are about to bloom, but none of my EE's are up yet. I thought I saw a little something in the pot where my Illustris is, trying to emerge. They seem to be coming up slower than...

Logees may have a variegated one. I know that I've seen them and the foliage is really cool looking.
That's the link for the variegated one! It's on sale, too!

What you find in the grocery store is called Taro, but it isn't the same as the really nice Elephant ears. The named varieties will only be found at nurseries, or through other people who have them.

Wes, you ought to be ashamed of yourself for not inviting me to partake in your asparagus harvest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Roasting it, I presume?

It sure did freeze here, Lyn! It got down to 28 degrees. This is incredibly weird for now...and to think that tomorrow night, I may wind up using the a/c.
The ROS weren't harmed a bit, but I was worried about the buds that have already started to develop. The things that I covered were...

Believe it or not, Easter of 2006, there were 5 inches of snow on the ground here. I had to cover things then, too, but I didn't have anywhere near as much as I have now............Weather....you have to love it or hate it. And we can't live without it!!!!!!!! I shudder to think what's going to...
