What is the Difference Between Old Fashioned and Quick Oats?

Old fashioned (or rolled) oats are rolled into flakes and stay fresher longer. Quick oats are cut into smaller pieces and rolled thinner. This helps them cook faster, but they won’t have as much texture as old fashioned oats. We like old fashioned oats in this recipe because they keep their texture even with the long cooking time. Quick oats tend to get too mushy for my liking when cooked in the slow cooker.

Can I Use Steel Cut Oats in this Recipe?

Yes definitely! Steel cut oats are great in this recipe. Use the same measurement of oatmeal. You may need to add another half hour so to the cook time, but all the other ingredients can stay the same. Steel cut oats have a great texture and a nuttier flavor that goes great with apples!

What Type of Apples Should I Use?

We love, love, love Rave apples from Costco in this recipe. Honey Crisp is also great, and Braeburns or Pink Lady will work just fine too.

Toppings

Oh I’m allllllll about the toppings for oatmeal! We have caramel listed in the ingredients for topping, but the options are endless really. Here are a few more ideas:

  • Cinnamon
  • Honey
  • Chopped pecans or walnuts
  • Raisins or craisins (or any dried fruit for that matter)
  • Fresh blue berries
  • Banana slices
How to Make Apple Pie Oatmeal on the Stove Top

If you want this oatmeal in a little less time than 7 hours, you can make it on the stove top too. Cook the apples as stated in the instructions but cook them for longer so they are fully cooked through. Then add everything to your pot. Bring everything to a boil and then reduce the heat to medium low and it cook for 20-25 minutes.

How Long Will Cooked Oatmeal Keep?

Left over oatmeal should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 4-6 days.

Oats are some of the healthiest grains on earth.

It is gluten free and has many health benefits including, weight loss, lower blood sugar levels and a reduced risk of heart disease.
