Hello Brighton,
There are a lot of various species of low growing perennials, a lot of them tend to be rather invasive.
Since the area is in shade, this restricts the number of species that would do well.
Since your soil is clay you might want to use small polished colored pea gravel instead...this is just a suggestion as a low maintenance alternative. You can remove some of the clay soil between the stones and add the pea gravel.....
