The Sapodilla tree is a tropical evergreen tree that is native to Belize, the Yucatan and Guatemala. The Sapodilla tree is grown in many tropical countries for export. The fruit is actually prized for its sticky latex sap — chicle — that was once the main ingredient in chewing gum. The Sapodilla tree produce fruit that can reach two pounds and it can be eaten raw when it is scooped out hard from is brown shell with a spoon when it is ripe. In its native setting the sapodilla plant tree can reach about 100 feet. In places like Florida and California it is much smaller — twelve feet — and it actually does well in these home gardens with some basic planting care.
