The botanical name of Valerian plant is Valeriana officinalis and the plant is a flowering perennial plant is that is native to much of Europe and Asia. The root of valerian plant is used in many medicinal applications and it is known to be an effective sleep aid. Valerian plant can grow up to 5 feet tall, and when in bloom, the top of the plant is covered with small pale pink or white flowers. Valerian plant flowers have a sweet scent that is reminiscent of vanilla and cloves and they’re also attractive to pollinators due to their abundant nectar. Valerian plants attract a lot of species of flies (including hoverflies) and they are a major food source for many species of butterfly.
