Have a spot in my backyard that gets pretty good sun and i want to turn it into a full on farm. I see two options, raised beds, or directly into the soil. The problem is my soil is clay. I tried raised beds a few years ago and it didn't workout (see the rectangular dead zone), not sure why it didn't work to be honest, though i did not seal the bottom with tarp so perhaps the soil was too dry.

What is my best option? Also is there any informative books on this as to what to plant with what at what time? also how to protect from rabbits, squirrels and insects?

Really i want vegetables and berries year round.

And i should note i live in southern California.

Thanks.
