I also know it from the aquarium hobby, where the tiny particles with lots of sharp edges are used in water filtration. They can be used to "polish" the water, getting it to be extra clear.

What I really like about it for garden use is that it's non-toxic. It's just extra fine dirt. Granted, it's not good to breathe the dust. It's not good to breath any dust. But you don't have to worry about it building up to toxic levels or contaminating your food.
