    Onions yes...Never have tried Carrots..but I would say if they are still tiny ...you should have no problem if you just plant them right in the soil as is

    Was doing a little research on this subject and came across the idea of scattering pine cons or needles...tiny twigs or pebbles on top of the soil..if the soil is prickly and uncomfortable to dig in or walk on they will want to use as a little box.. you can also put a piece of chicken wire on...
