Ooo! Almost forgot one of my favs to plant to keep critters away - hot peppers, the hotter the better for this use. I like ornamentals as they usually are super HOT and the plants are usually colorful! :p
chives & garlic are two bulbs which are nice to intersperse in the garden & have beneficial aspects as well. edible too. ;) And different onions are cool to grow as well.
companion planting - great idea!
Here's another site GrowVeg which has some great info. Many flowering plants may also be edible as well as provide insect benefits, such as nasturtium, mints, chamomile, etc.
Also, wikkipedia has a cool chart showing what you should plant together for best...
Several thoughts for the day
1. I think part of a best friend's job should be to immediately clear your computer history if you die.

What a gift!
Wow Dawn! What a gift! Someone really knows how to get your attention! LOL!! Seeing as they were sealed in a can, as long as they weren't cooked or something, you should get amazing germination on these, even as old as 1982. Keep us updated!

If you are looking for lily bulbs, try GH Wild - they have the best prices and the bulbs are excellent quality - usually bloom within months of being planted. They have beautiful hostas as well!
