    When to divide perennials?

    I am zone 5 also, and I only dig and divide in the early spring when the perennials are out of the ground about 2 inches. Good luck.

    We have catalpa here in the Hudson Valley too. My neice and nephew come from Minnesota every October and love to take the dried pods back with them. They get about 1 foot long.

    I have moved peonies in the spring and the fall with great success. I would not put them in a pot, put them in the ground where you want them to avoid having to disturb them again.

    Mulching the garden

    It's important to make sure the manure is aged, at least a year. I use shredded tree branches that my electric company dumps on my driveway after trimming the trees. I let it set for about 2 years before using. Good luck with your garden!!!
