    I would say 18 inches is way too high for the lights. 2 to 4 inches is much better. One of those thing you had in school but think you'll never use is the "Inverse square law".     hummers more than ever

    I need to find a new good spot for my HB feeder, I used the old one for something else. It has to be near enough to my swing that I can see them when I sit outside.

    About the Sunflower Cafe

    When I am sickly I like a good chicken noodle soup with extra rubbed sage on top. It seems to help a lot. Get well, everybody that's under the weather :)

    Ground Cherries

    I like ground cherries so don't take this the wrong way. They grow out as much or more than up, so plant them where you have room, maybe a 3 ft square for each plant to allow for easy picking. I should say "picking up" because the fruit aren't ripe til they fall and don't have the good sweet...

    greenhouse location

    I think that location will be a good start. A greenhouse that size can always be moved if need be. Good luck and keep a journal hanging in the greenhouse so you can note the day the maple gets leaves, days of starting seeds, etc. You can use those notes next year. Happy planting!

    New USDA Map

    I take this map with a LARGE grain of salt, just like I do most gov "information". Somebody somewhere is getting paid, and paid well for averaging the temperatures of the last 15 years and saying "it's getting warmer" (or colder). What a cushy job.

    Kitchen herbs

    The best way I have found to control mints is to cut them back and use them frequently. With the top being constantly pruned the plant won't over-stay it's welcome.

    Gladiolus

    I WAS in zone 6b til yesterday, found I'm in 7a on the new USDA map, so they do come back here. I had a few, all one color, kind pink-orange. Not a bad color just all one color. The new ones are supposed to be mixed so we'll see.

    Yup, knowing what plant would be good. Forsythia will root almost every time, roses sometimes, oaks not at all.

Cut the bottom off at an angle and the top straight across so you don't plant them upside-down and put a handful in a sturdy zip-lok bag in the fridge until you're moved.     This might sound dumb and it would all depend on what you are growing in the raised bed, but what about a wood bottom?
