Allen in Vermont----------seeing your pictures makes me sad & "envious"(?).
I always started some of my garden plants from seed (tom's, gr.peppers, herbs--etc,) and a few years ago a friend of mine asked if I'd like to start some for him. Being as they had a vegtable "stand" --that meant a LOT...

Kchar-------just a note-----mints will spread everywhere!!!! Unless you dont mind it taking over your grden-it's best to keep them in their own separate containers.
Kya------this wild ginger--can it grow anywhere--or does it have to be a "warmer" climate?
-
MMmmmmmm-----love pot roast-----but not with tomatoes. I just brown up the meat with onions & garlic(dont think my Mom ever used garlic--but I have to!)----then add carrots, potatoes, & sometimes turnip. And a little water. Then put it in the oven till it's tender. MMMMmm!
Oh------sometimes I...

Sorry I'm getting to this after Christmas--------but if you want the recipes for next year (or whenever)(good for Valentines Day too) I'll post them.
This is what I made for "candies" this year---
Truffles--
Irish Cream...

Fantastic squash Randy!!!!!!! I'm sure the people at the nursing home will love it!

Jade---I think we all are in that "self preservation" mode this year. I know canning products are scarce in the stores this year--people are grabbing them up as soon as they get on the shelf!! I have been having a hard time finding alum. I usually get it at the "Amish" store but they sold out...

If anyone burns wood------and has the patience----dry your corn cobs and use them for fire starters. I left some outside to dry in the sun last year--pretty good "tinder".

1. Has anyone ever canned squash--if so-how did it turn out?
2. How long do canned( home canned) tomatoes last? I found about 6 quarts of tomatoes on the shelf that have '05 on them. There is no discoloration or "growth" of any kind. Will they still be ok to eat?

Has anyone ever made jam from dried cherries? I had a bag of dried chereries given to me and was wondering if I could just re-hydrate them and make some jam out of them? Anyone have any thoughts on this?:D
-
Lisa------I'm afraid I'm not very good at swapping out the spices--but maybe someone else can tell you. Sorry:o

Thanks Randy--but cant take the credit for this one. My friends father wanted me to make some for him but I didn't have a recipe--so he got it from his mother! So it's an oooooooold recipe-lol. I think that's why the original recipe called for salt in the brine-not sugar. Back then the farmers...

I have a recipe somewhere for "Green Tomato Pickles"---it's an old fashioned recipe and sweet. I'll try to find it and post it for you. I would imagine if you wanted some "hot" you could just replace some of the green tomatoes with hot peppers.

Well John--------I'm definately no expert----but that is a bit deep. The seeds may be rotting before they can reach the top. Of course a lot has to do with temp of the soil and moisture. Have you had a lot of rain?
Not sure about the first brand of seed , but Burpee is usually pretty reliable...

Corn Freak--------was the corn you found growing on a nuke waste dump???????:D:D
Just kidding;)
I agree with the others-----it's probably some kind of cattle or fuel fodder.
Keep us posted.
-
Gloria--------I remember my Mom making raspberry cobbler--she would cook up the raspberries & sugar (maybe some water) in a big pot--then when they got to bubbling she would add dumplings and cover the pot till the dumplings were cooked. Put some in a bowl and pour some cream over it---Mmmmmmmmm!

Hey Curbie!Welcome "back"! I remember you from GG ( I think LOL) Glad Jules found you and told you all the "oldies but goodies" were here-plus some really nice "newbies".

Laurie---the "Old Farmers Almanac" is what we go by up here and I'm quite sure the book does have a section on "regional" planting.
I used to "scoff" at my friend when I found out he 'consulted" the almanac before planting----but he grows acres of veggies for his "farm stand" and does very...

Wombat & Randy--
Youngest son & his father went fishing Sat.(secret spot!;):D) Caught quite a few but brought home only a couple of good sized( 1 about 12" & the other about14-15") brook trout. Now if I can just get some fresh fiddleheads to go with them! MMMmmmmm!
Love fresh trout--but...

Hi Herby! So great to be "talking" to you again! And all our ol' GG buddies( & the new ones! LOL) Anxiously waiting for your "sage" advice.;):D Have a new herb my daughter-in-law got me for Mother's Day that I will probably need some help with--as soon as I can remember the name of...
