What's the weather in your area? 2023 Edition

Down here in Florida, we basically missed winter. The last few weeks have been record breaking highs in the mid to high 90's. Drought like conditions have plagued many portions of the state. We finally had a nice all day soft rain on Sunday.

    Surprise gift from "Irma"

Look! A gift from Hurricane Irma. I have never had these, never grown these, never seen them in my yard. Just found them growing among my ginger. I guess they came up in the flood waters. Finally she gave me something positive.

What's the weather in your area? 2022 Edition

Our weather is unusually abnormal. We are facing yet another cold front with high winds and rain. I can't seem to get the storm damage from Irma cleaned up and repaired. Ugh

    Identifying plants toxic to dogs

What type of dogs do you have, and how old are they? Do they typically eat your landscaping? I've never encountered anyone who could attribute illness in their ups to loquats. My son has 4 dogs, and several loquats trees. So I can't really say safe or not. Beauty berry , berries are toxic...

    Recipe Sauerkraut anyone?

Supe easy! Wash and Shred your cabbage. Soak it in a heavy brine solution for about 2 hours. Pack and clean quart jars, I find Wide Mouth Jars are the best. Pack tightly, and cover with brine leaving 1/4 inch headspace. Place Lids on lightly. Do not tighten Lids down, the band is only to keep...

What's the weather in your area? 2022 Edition

Overcast and breezy. I should be outside, but it rained last night and it's too wet.

    Shiitake mushrooms

You are correct Bob. That's one reason you use green logs without any other fungi, that, and that other fungi can be invasive and eat you shrooms. Buy only inoculated product from certified farms. Wild mushroom picking requires extensive education and experience to avoid a bad experience. Case...

    What are you spring plans?

Tim built me a raised bed when I was in a wheelchair. Now that I'm up and in good shape, I still really appreciate that bed being up. I wish I had more. I'll post a picture when the rain stops

    Shiitake mushrooms

I have ventured into a new area. My first attempt was a bust a few years ago. But a friend of mine renewed my interest in mushrooms. I bought a seeded block and had great success. So I bought the supplies to go big. There are several ways you can go. I HAVE a table top log I am starting for my...

    Recipe Sauerkraut anyone?

For many years I have put up sauerkraut. I love it! I just started a batch last month and it has a few more weeks of fermentation. Does anyone else make kraut? Maybe Randy?

To protect my garden from squirrels and rabbits

Here in Florida, squirrels ravage gardens. I have adopted a few feral cats over the years. They have all become pets, however , one of them has retained some of its wild instincts, which has provided me with a patrol sentry. While he is ok with birds, he loves to chase squirrels. They have...

    Mint and Basil

I have several mint varieties in post, as well as oregano, thyme, and basil. My cilantro is so prolific that I never need to replant, it is even growing in my lawn! The temps are getting to hot for it so most of it has flowered and is re-seeding.
