    Wait, wait! Don't add fertilizer! You'll stress you already stressed plants. They need to dry out some and get over that stress. You're fertilizing too much already if you're fertilizing once a week. And toss out the Miracle Grow and get something with less nitrogen, your plants already look leggy.

    How do you grow daylilies in a shade garden? We always have some walking iris donated to the Historic Camden plant sale, but I've never tried to grow it. I'll ask about it, but that won't e until May.

    That is more correctly a saucer magnolia, although a lot of people call it a tulip tree. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/2452/ A tulip tree is more correctly a tulip poplar. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1031/ It's beautiful, no matter what you call it.

    Herb for shady area?

    You know, a lot of people complain about mint, but I've never really seen it as a problem. Yes, it runs, but I let it run under shrubs and established perennials. If it gets too big, I yank a handful out. If it runs into the grass, well, it smells good when I mow.

    Mints, bee balm, some sages, anise hyssop, chives,sweet woodruff, and lemon balm will all tolerate shade. Here in the south, bee balm actually needs some shade; but I have a friend in Vermont who has the largest bee balm I've ever seen, and hers is in full sun. Oregano does better in full sun...
