Sorry to hear of your brother-in-law's fall. My cousin (the transcriptionist) said 90% of her reports are trauma this month,the other 10% flu. Most trauma is from home repairs in October.

The ones that seem to do best around here are half in the dirt and half out. They are also sideways. They go through a wet phase (acorn shell is moist) and then a dry phase that cracks the acorn. They then put off a tap root.

its quite a ways from Granite Bay so I thought I would come down the hill. My cousin is in Sac so maybe I will visit her too at that time. She's a stones throw from Capitol Nursery by the way ;-) October is my favorite month and this year I'm really looking forward to it!

Saffron is a fall crocus. Don't know yet if mine are coming back. The bloom is purple.
