With seemingly unending cleanup from the February ice storm, which entailed much tree work (more is still needed), a roof repair, A/C replacement, and a side fence replacement, plus extra pruning-back necessitated by the damaging December freeze — whew! — I’ve gotten behind on the usual spring gardening chores. My most hated chore is weeding, and boy, does it show in the lower garden. Still, I manage to avert my eyes most days and just enjoy the sight of Koosh-ball yuccas and pink ‘Peggy Martin’ roses clambering along the fence.
Spiky yuccas and the Katrina rose are happy companions in a sunny patch. Why plant a rose you have to spray and spray when you can grow a disease-resistant variety like ‘Peggy Martin’, which has such an amazing survival story too? Click the Katrina link if you don’t know it.
The ‘Frazzle Dazzle’ dyckias have also started blooming! Is there anything cuter than these mop-top dyckias with honey-yellow bloom spikes? The deer eat the flowers out front, but I can enjoy them for days and days in my back garden.
