Be a fisherman for a hoby and a biologist or Ichthyologist, for a career. Fishing is great , but it is a tough life and a tough way to make a living unless you are in Alaska on the big boats and then the danger factor outweighs the pay. I hate to say it but the American fisherman is on his way out. Regulation and restrictions are not in their favor. But you can still be on the water and capitalize on your hoby by becoming a professional in that field. State wildlfie biologist here make great money. I worked under one for a while and I had a blast. Everyday was spent on the water doing some form of research. Get your education in something you enjoy and then make a wise choice

Thanks for the advice! And yeah, I'm thinking maybe marine biology. With all the probs in the oceans right now, I could prolly get work with that pretty easy. But I will have some financial advantages after college so I could prolly do the hobby thing too.

Congrats on the new leaves bananamama, may you have many more! I had a friend who was studying to be a marine biologist, she ended up being a park ranger and she loves it. It was more ''hands on" and she could actually see the differences she was making in the park.

Oh, Wombat ~ I have to tell you this. When we were in high school, we had to take an aptitude test to see what type of job we'd be best suited for. MINE came out PARK RANGER! What park does your friend work in? My daughter wanted to be a marine biologist so she could 'play with the dolphins'. Your friend and I have a lot in common! ~ Curbie

I never took a life science in high school or college, but I hit the physical sciences pretty hard. Yet I have always had a keen interest in the life sciences. Fish and wildlife hold a special interest to me. I remember when Crabber was working with that biologist and she was excited to tell us what they were working on.

Curbie she works at the The Great Barrier Reef marine park.......paradise as far as I'm concerned. It's a beautiful part of the world, it's about 1000 miles to the north of me.

My banana is putting out another leaf, this doesn't usually happen in winter but I'm not complaining lol

GREAT BARRIER! She is fearless. What's in the marine park? Hey, I got 2 big wooden tubs AND<<<< the gizmo 3 wheel thingers to set the pots on. But then I bought a hydrangea so I think I'm putting the hydrangea in one pot (on the wheely thing) and maybe a huge coleus I bought. NEVER take me to Home Depot! I know EXACTLY how NOT to do something! It's an art form! (MTM went to get a piece of wood b/c he NOW has a trot lone and is using it today with his buddy. This morning he asked," DO YOU know how SCARED I AM?" i'm sure the crabs are quaking in their boots too.)~ Curbie

That was a treasured time Randy. Unfortunately those jobs were the first cut when funding declined

Yeah, I remember. I had a chance to volunteer years ago and I served several years as a reserve warden for the California Department of Fish and Game. The warden captain smiled upon me and I believe I could have worked into a full-time position, but my wife didn't like the idea, so I didn't pursue that as a vocation. Always makes me wonder 'what if', but all I can so is speculate.

I guess if everyone had a job they REALLY loved, they wouldn't call it work. Nice concept though.

I think your 'job' should be enjoyable. Teaching just came natural to me (even though I began in physical therapy) Some people are 'drawn' to computers or retail. My daughter thought about marine biology and now she works for Astrazenica (MedImmune). She's a natural at that. We can try but we can't hide, from what we enjoy and are naturally gifted at. ~ Curbie

I lost my Banana pup but the Mama Plant and 2 Banana pups in the other garden have survived! Since we had the hail storm and 18 days at 100*F and higher, everything is growing very very slow right now but they'll start growing faster when the heat wave ends. Here's how the Mama and 2 pups look today!

Oh wow sorry you lost your pup Trax......I hope your heatwave disappears soon so everything can get back to normal. Curbie in the marine park there's over 1500 species of fish alone and they're all super friendly and you can feed them by hand, it's a wonderful place. Crabber yes she has the world's best job and she knows it, she says she still pinches herself at times to make sure it's all true. Fancy getting paid for living and working in paradise? There's over 900 islands to explore and nearly 3000 individual reefs, ........she explored the wonderful Heart shaped reef about a month ago....it's only about 60Ft in diameter but it's a great view from the air.

Wow, Wombat ~ that's like living in paradise for her! I don't nkow how to scuba dive nor snorkel so I'd just be swimming with the sharks. The water is a lovely shade of blue. Sure beats our Atlantic coastline where it looks like mud. I have a favortie island to go to but it's only 3 islands. Trax don't throw your 'pupp'y away. Bring it back in your home and bring it back to life. I know you can do this ~ BananaMama

Curbie she's having a ball AND she gets paid lol Trax and Crabber yeah it's a fabulous place. About 3 months ago she sent me an email telling me all about her swim with Wally....I thought yeah big deal who's Wally? Then she sent me a pic lol
