CrabberGirl has a great idea! :) Put the pot on wheels! I guess I forgot the heads up about them growing 8 feet or more in one summer. Oops! :eek:
 
That pup looks soooo healthy Trax, well done! I wish i could grow cav's but I can't:mad: We've had a bit more rain here and my new pup has reached about 4ft tall. I'm glad it's shooting up as a cold winter has been forecast here and that means frost which can kill a lot of my tropical plants 'nanas included.
 
Now, ou're gong to be proud of me ~ I planted the banana plant b/c it wasn't looking very good (maybe it didn't like the lilac or the pussy willow ~ I can't believe they put all those plants in one bag. It took me an hour to get INTO the bag! I was singing 'Lions and Tigers and Bears ~ OH MY!') SO :) The banana plant is in a pot ~ not the best one but it's planted. The lilac is in a pot until the ground thaws to put it in-in the ground by MTM and the pussy willow is in a pot until.....well :) Trax, I really need your help with this attempt......do they need no water or lots of water. Wombat, you can chime in ,too. ALL HELP IS GREAT! Sunshine? This plant (not including the pot ~ bottom of the STEM to top is 29" tall.......I thought I was getting a puppy! Curbie

29 inches tall!? Awesome! That's a sweet size for a pup! :)

1. Well draining soil. 1/3 normal garden soil, 1/3 potting soil (Miracle Gro is great), and 1/3 vermiculate or something that helps water drain.
I've even used some sand but that can drain water too fast.

2. Give it about medium water for the first watering. Let the soil get totally dry then lots of water.
Always wait till the soil gets dry before the next watering.

3. Keep it in the shade (no direct light) for about a week. Then put it in a sunny window. That will keep the leaves from burning.

4. If the leaves start turning yellow or brown (especially indoors), you might have spider mites. Let me know if that ever happens cause they're not very easy to kill.

They are turning brown but I was thinking it was b/c it wasn't in soil. I may have MITES? geez......just when i thought i may have conquered bedbugs and stinkbugs. Do you konw what I should do for mite/bites :) It had green & brown leaves on it when I took it out of this box. Maybe I should just let it settle in?What would I be looking for? I'll be darned if I let this thing die. The lilac bush is so big ~ MTM is going to think he is in a nursery when he gets home! Thank you SO much Trax. You know, if this plant would happen to not make it.....I am just hanging bananas off of it (THAT is Pittsburgh ingenuity!)Curbie

ROFL! :D Noooo! It's waaaay too early for mites! :) Just cut the brown parts off and it'll prolly do great! Banana trees are def not that easy to kill, lol!
The most important thing is if it has a top leaf that's green or mostly green. If it does then it's okay. But if the top doesn't start growing in a few days then we'll needa operate so it can make a new leaf. :)
 
OK ~ I am trying. We'll be away over the weekend and I EXPECT BANANAS on this plant by the time we get home Sunday :) :) :) I think we need a vacation away from each other. Thanks, Trax for all of your help. Curbie
 
WTG young Curbie, as Trax said bring on the pics, it'll be great watching it grow and mature into a tree.

I agree with Trax , it may just be in shock from the move. Give it a week or so and see how it is doing. Mine are just now getting a few green tips coming out from all the frozen stuff. I feel like a bad banana mamma. I know I was taking a chance when I planted them :(
 


So the singing won't affect it? LOL! We will be going to Pittsburgh this weekend and I really know this needs a bigger pot. Rats, my goldfish died this morning so I can't have another death in the family...........what kind of light does this gizmo take? Maybe I have it in the wrong place. It's in the house and I can drag it around a little. Geez, this is like having a kid.......Curbster :)
 
I may have fixed my banana tree/pup thing. Now that my goldfish has died I'm onto saving a tree :) This is one of the dumbest things I have ever tried to do .....did someone talk me into this... Crubster

I SHOULD have buried it in there! Gosh, you're right! LOL! MTM and I were talking about Jacque when MTM got home last night and my daughter even called to give condolences. She said," MOM! It was a feeder fish so you gave it a great life!They're bred not to live long. " Now, you tell me how you breed a fish not to live long..........usually she's really smart but that comment had me wondering ~ :) I moved the banana tree so we will see! Curbie

Curbie bananas are really hard to kill, as long as it's kept warm and has good light it should be fine. I don't really have much experience growing them indoors, mine have always been outside, but I'm sure Trax will set you right regarding it's care.:)
 
Thanks, Wombat THINK what a really need is a bigger pot. I am NOT giving up. I can't put it outside but you say they need a lot of light? Can it be a lamp? I have carried this heavy thing all over the place...I really feel like it's become my other child!~ Curbie

That's a hard one for me to answer Curbie as I've never grown bananas indoors, I think Trax will have all the answers for you:)
 
Curbie, I use some half-barrels for plants. They probably hold about 25 gallons of soil which makes them difficult to move. I bought some 4-wheel dollies from Harbor Freight when they were on sale for $10 a pop and set those under the half-barrels. The barrels are made of oak and were used for wine-making. There is a bit of residual wine odor, but that shouldn't hurt your bananas except for an occasional hiccup.
 


You are so funny, Randy. But that is a great idea. This little un-happy camper needs to go somewhere else. I put it in the big window sill this afternoon to try to get it 'rolling' (and I didn't sing Proud Mary to it) I may have over watered it but it's in great company now. My cilantro is growing well and so is the basil. We spent the WHOLE morning delivering MTM's shamrocks. I had a brainstorm and said,"HEY! SINCE you're OFF, we can deliver shamrocks that you grew!" He really was funny when he said,"WHY does this TAKE so long?" For one person, I sat in the car transplanting shamrocks saying,"Here ~ take this to Sheriff b/c it looks better now." So, now we know we can transplant plants in a car. If this is my only contribution to gardening, just remember: Sing Tina Turner "You Will Survive" and have patience. We delivered 25 pots of shamrocks and that is nice.Made MTM feel good and I got dirt under my nails. Made me feel good. In my opinion, people should receive things when they least expect it.
