Last night, MTM was sitting at the kitchen table and he faces the window sill. He asked," How many banana plants do you have?" Well....... Ever tap-dance your way around a conversation. Fred Astair and I are tight! I was singing all the way through this conversation. "You see ~ I ordered inside tomato plants but I got banana plants." Yes, but I paid for indoor tomato plants. "Why did you get banana plants?" Because they SENT me BANANA plants and no tomato plants until the other day. LOOK at the GREAT TOMATO plants! "HOW many banana plants do you have??????" well.....you are the proud father of six banana plants! I thought he was going to faint! Then he started yelling so I started singing MTM asked, "WOT are we going to DO with these trees?" Boy, did I try to look smart! >> I << have a perfect plan!! Instead of a Christmas tree this year, we hang stuff on the banana trees! SEE! THAT saves us the money on buying a Christmas tree We can decorate them with lights b/c they have to stay warm and we can put them on the picnic table.....oh yeh ~ me and Fred Astair were tap dancing for a while Michael! I don't even know how to keep one ALIVE........back to tap dancing ~ Curbster
Six banana trees? Sheesh Curbie or should I say Ginger Rogers? .....do you have any relatives or friends in Florida that you can send them too? They'd make a nice birthday present ya know!
Womabt, if you ever want to meet a full blown banana-brain, come visit me. I order tomato plants and get banana plants. And they are really growing! I have 3 in one pot and 3 in a different pot. I had them outside yesterday (in the shade ) I carry these things around like they're my kids. One of my teenagers came over yesterday and asked ,"WHY do you have these strange plants? Shamrocks, banana trees, and all that stuff in the backyard. WHEN are you going to stop GROWING THINGS?" I did not have an answer! Curbie

Tim ran over a good size pup that was coming up. He was trying to help me by cutting the grass but he drove too close to my trees. So I had to go and pull the grass WAY back from the tree so he has no excuse next time. ....Oh wait do we really think he will cut the grass again?? Just wondering , it is a once a year thing for him. LOL!!
Let Tim cut the grass in the winter. I don't even nkow b/c of our rain and heat in the summer and our snow in the winter......if I will EVER be able to put these nanna trees OUTSIDE. (Do you want to live under a lilac bush? Do you want to live on the ugly side of the house?You'll get osggy outside. HEY! You're happy in the KITCHEN window......YOU get to live with SHAMROCKS!) Yep. a curb always knows that she's made out of birdseed and cat fur. ~ Curbs

Congrats about the new leaf! Banana flowers are huge, purple or pink, and very heavy! And you can boil them and eat them. they taste like celery!
Btw, I put a banana corm that i thought was dead in a pot. I was gonna throw it away but now it has a big fat 4 inch tall banana pup growing outa it!! Now I have 2 banana trees!!

Thanks Trax. I'd like a huge purple one please . I think they need to be watered.Where do I put them ~ under a shade tree? They can't get sunburned. I think 'nana mama' should learn But 'Nana Mama' has 2 broken toes. No worries little nana's. Mama will take great care of you....... Never throw away a plant Trax b/c you have 'the gift' . Hey Curbie, yeah Trax is right about the banana flower but it'll be quite a while before you get one. The tree has to be tall enough to support the large bunch that grows from the flower as it unfurls. If all of your trees survive you'll have heaps of bananas and then you'll have to set up a road side stall and sell them to passing motorists.

I got some help with my plants so i could take some photos! The 1st one is the new banana tree! Dunno what kind yet but it looks totally healthy!
The 2nd one is my Elephant ears starting to sprout!
And the 3rd one is my camera, lol!
Man, a barrel of monkeyshiners! My concern with my 'babies' is that I don't think I can ever permanently put them in the ground b/c of our winters. Thoughts on that? Right now it is 58° with a high to be 85° with a high chance of rain. What am I to do? ~ Curbie
Just keep them inside for now till your foot gets well. they'll be happy in the window. I grew one inside for a whole year!
This winter won't be as easy though and I need to study more and decide what to do then. One good thing, they have shallow roots so they're never tuff to dig up!

I wonder if you planted them out side and during the winter mulched them withseveral inches of mulch and then tented them with a light inside if that would help them survive. Mine die back after a freeze back to the ground when we do have freezes but keeping them mulched protects them. Now I guess what you would need to consider is what your frost or freeze line is in the ground. It may not work.
That other option is to plant them outside, wait till the first freeze that kills back the tops and then dig the croms and keep them in pots in the basement until when the ground thaws. . Hard to know without ever trying it. Just think you could be a pioneer in growing nanas in the north!

Wow! Curbie is being so cool! I think we should all help out and send her 4 banana plants for each one she sends us!
Btw, the best way seems to be to keep the banana plants as house plants with artificial light or near a window. I've talked to a lot of other people (in cold climates) who tried different ways in the winter but that way seems to work best.
If they get too big, like maybe 20 feet tall, you can lean them over so they'll fit. It's harder to water them that way but they don't need much water in the winter anyway.
HOLY COW! These are going to get THAT TALL ?? ? ? ? Why did I do this? I want to see the flowers but I'm beginning to wonder about my sanity. I am 5 foot tall so I will eventually have a plant that is 4 times taller than myself. WELL, THIS will go over with MTM! "No, now listen honey. See, Trax said....AND I know....." Mine have their own suitcases b/c I am constantly dragging them hither and yon ~ You're inside - you're outside- you're in the shade outside -wait, it's raining - no, you come in the house now. I'll bet these nannnas are sick and tired of me. If they run away from home, I wouldn't blame them. ~ Curbie
