Geez......I just tried to find something on here and......did you know there are threads about plants???? I need to sit still a wee bit longer I guess :) ~
 
MF will get on the train in Sacramento about 11:00 PM and will be in Salem tomorrow afternoon about 4:00 PM. I'll have to take my shoes off if you need to know how many hours that is.
 


That is a LONG ride ! YOUR shoes ~ heck we're in different time zones. Hope she has a safe trip home and had a mostly pleasant visit. ~ C.
 
I checked her arrival time and it is 2:00 PM. Glad I looked as she would be a mite irritated if I showed up at 4:00. I can drive that distance in 10-1/2 hours and that is taking into account for eating and potty stops. But it's also much more stressful. I am looking forward to our trip in October and I can check out the scenery along the track. Course it might be a little hard to see in the dark.
 
It cuts down our mobility when we go down though. But the next two trips are to help MF's brothers wife while she has to keep her hands immobile, so that means staying close to their place. MF said they had a drunk fellow in her car last night and this morning. She figured he was about my age. He was an attorney and still succeeded in being put off the train along with his two companions. The two companions did not cause any problems though.
 
What's the matter with the wife's hands? There are happy drunks and mean drunks ! only allow the happy ones at our parties and I have never had to ask anyone to leave. But, being a happy- kind- of- person...I have rid my life of nasty, depressing people. Sort of like, I didn't know I didn't HAVE to finish reading a crummy book! and i don't even like to read b/c of my eyesight..... Still in the learning stages of my life :)
 
We are always in that stage of life. MF did say that they didn't think about it, but they could have pushed a button or something to get one of the train attendants to come to their aid. Bet she'll remember next time though if it happens again. She will probably take another trip down this month and another one in October. I will go on that one (in October).
 
oh goodie another trip for randy but does that mean you will go by train??? or drive....october is a great month to travel.......I love fall......I think Ill go over to VT at the end of sept for a day, altho Id rather go to maine, its not in my budget....as I would stay there for several days.....
 


Yes, we will go on the train next time. I don't think MF has nailed down the dates for the trip down this month and I am pretty sure she will be gone longer than she was this last time. I figure when we go down in October, we will be gone a couple of weeks. I think I am going to get to meet LateBloomer when I go down then. I used to know right where Forest Hill was years ago, but I have been gone from CA for over 40 years now and I will have to look at a map to see where it is.

its quite a ways from Granite Bay so I thought I would come down the hill. My cousin is in Sac so maybe I will visit her too at that time. She's a stones throw from Capitol Nursery by the way ;-) October is my favorite month and this year I'm really looking forward to it!
 
We used to think it took to long to go by train when we were young but it is fun now. I think just riding on a train is a nice way to travel. I just wish there were more trains in this country to go on. I still can't believe I have to go to Chicago to get to Kansas City or anywhere in Kansas for that matter. seems like you should be able to change trains somewhere else.
 
Our sister-in-law works at Capitol Nursery, the one on Madison Avenue. When we lived down there, there was only one and it was the one out on Freeport Blvd. Marcia Fay's brother and his wife handle all the advertising for Capitol Nursery.
 
I think more trains run along the coasts (oh, now I'm sure I'm so wrong) but they run in grids ~ i.e. you can only go north -> south OR east->west. I'm glad there are so many freight trains. When we are in Pittsburgh, it is ASTOUNDING what is carried by these trains ~ but that's freight, not folks. I haev a love for trailer trucks that are carrying aspirin......HOW many aspirin fit in a trailer truck? We had 2 trailer trucks collide the other day on our Eastern Shore and one was carrying green beans and the other one was carrying asparagus! Now THAT is a Farmer's Market!!!! ~ :)
 
We just had a freight train track open through our town again. Was sure happy to hear that whistle again. I think they shut it down in the 80's and it was fun watching them lay all new track last year. I think the first throughline opened up in June and since then there are several trains a day...................two blocks from my house:o) I do wish we had passenger trains down this way though. I rode a train in Germany,in 2001, from Frankfurt to Villengen (Black Forrest) and the last train I rode before that was a special coach from Victoria to San Antonio Texas to foot ball games when my sister and brother were in the high school band............in the 1950's. The first train I rode was 63 years ago to go into town to a doctor to have a boil lanced on the back of my leg........age 4. They've long since torn the depot down in our little town......8 miles from the county seat. nostalgia
 
In Pittsburgh, hubby and I used to stay at a motel (b/c we could bring the dog who became like a mascot for the place when we stayed there ~ "Don't forget to bring ELLIE!") and the train ran right along the river and blow those daggone horns at 3AM ~ 3:20 AM ~ 4AM. The place has now gone out of business and hubby and I tried to buy it 1.5 years ago and I actually met with the owner.....like WE have 4 million dollars. It sold for 2 million dollars and will be torn down. So b/c of traveling with the dog, we have found another dog friendly place. FIrst time there, I was up all night. My hubby said in the morning,"You look like _____. What's the matter?" there were no trains.....
No wait: This does not make any sense to me: The first train I rode was 63 years ago You are not even that old ~ :)
 
I am too! I was born in '42. 67 on the 16 of August:o) I sleep like a log, and the train has never bothered me at all. Sort of soothing during the day.......
We used to ask mama if we could run down to the last street so we could wave to the conductors, engineers and brakeman:o) Back in the 40's we still had cattle drives through our little town with 4 streets one way and 5 the other. There were dipping pens and a cattle guard there where they would dip the cows for vermin and then hold them in the pens til the train came through, load them up and take them to auction or slaughter. Fun to stand out in the yard and watch the real cowboys herd the cattle down our street. Then when the cows were all past, we had to take a shovel out there with buckets and clean up the manure and carry it to the garden to be plowed in right away to age for the next crops.
Didn't I ever tell you I was a country girl:o)?

And proud of it too. I had a good time today visiting a farm south of here. Now I have three farmer friends. This one raises corn, wheat, vegetables, and grass. The grass is for seed and hay. I got to ride a corn picker today too. That thing is built on a combine chassis and is huge. It will pick 6 rows of corn at a time and 70 tons an hour. Dwight (the farmer) loaded me down with about three dozen ears of sweet corn before I left. There are two varieties called "Super Sweet" and this one is the yellow variety. A couple of weeks ago, he dropped off some of the white variety and was probably the best tasting corn I ever tasted. I'm going to see if I can find some seed for next year.
 


Oh, I have 2 heroes ~ John Wayne and Walt Disney. I KNEW I should have lived nextdoor to you, Froglady! I love machinery, like that corn picker. I got to ride in a garbage truck (oh yeh....you should have seen all 5' of me CRAWL into the truck) and why did I do that? To play 'Happy Birthday' on the horn for my neighbor! ~ :)
