I thought about you yesterday when at my sister-in-law's b/c she had this GIGANTIC bag of apples as a birthday present and someone asked,"Are you going to make pies for all of us???" When she said,"sssssssuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrreeeeeee", I said," Jules make great pies in NovaScotia(Gravenstine apples) and Randy has an orchard...." I suddenly shut up and I hope everybody else gets a pie ~ I will buy one

I have a small Gravenstein out there so far, but I only want it for scion wood so I can graft onto my Winesap tree. I have a special fondness for Gravenstein apples though. I planted one at our last house and it was a beautiful tree when we sold the house. The Sunset Garden Book says that the Gravenstein makes applesauce "with an attitude". And so it does.

We can't get Gravensteins here b/c I have asked MANY places. Jules RAVES about her pies made from them. What is this: "for scion wood" ~ Curbie

It is a piece of wood (limb) you cut from the tree you want to replicate. Your knife has to be sterile and very sharp. There are several ways to mate that to the parent tree and I have had the best luck with what is called the "cleft" graft. The scion is shaped like a wedge and pushed into a cut in the end of the parent limb. The cambium layer in the scion has to line up (mate) with the cambium in the parent limb, then it is wrapped to keep it secure while the two have a chance to grow together.

Oh, I can be forgetful. There are and have been times that I am asked if I remember something and I don't. Yet, given some time to just think about it and whatever it was comes to the fore. And, yes, there are many things I know nothing about, but hopefully I will know someone that can let me know what I need to know when the time arises. Frankly, I know I am quite ignorant, but I also recognize that there is such a vast field of knowledge that one person cannot begin to grasp the magnitude.

My brother grafted some apple trees and I noticed this yr that he has 2 different kinds of apples on one of his trees., I know some of the grafts didn't take.

Now, Bobbi, there are lots of things I cannot do. Curbie mentioned politician, but I would be a miserable failure if I tried that. One of my farmer friends was in politics and he still is, but he is not holding an office now. He did a couple of terms as a state legislator (lower house) and a couple of terms as a state senator. I told him that I could never do that. But if you want to know an example of something I know nothing about, how would you like me to perform surgery on your brain? LOL

I thought I was going to get interviewed today. I got an e-mail from one of the ladies in the psychology department yesterday. They have a grad student working toward her doctorate. They apparently like to interview us old folks to see how many marbles we still have. I have been through several of these things and I have some fun with them.

I thought I was going to get interviewed today. I got an e-mail from one of the ladies in the psychology department yesterday. They have a grad student working toward her doctorate. They apparently like to interview us old folks to see how many marbles we still have. I have been through several of these things and I have some fun with them.

I surprised one of them one time. He was just asking some general questions to see if I read much, I guess. But one of the questions was, "What artist did 'The Thinker'?" I couldn't remember. But about halfway through the interview it came to me. It was a French sculptor name Rodin. He had interviewed other people and he said I was the only one that ever answered that question. It's just a useless bit of trivia though. The statue though always intrigued me. Here this nekkid guy is sitting with his head propped on his hand and his right elbow is propped on his left knee. Or maybe it was his left elbow on his right knee. I can't imagine anyone in that condition being able to think. I know when I want to really try and think something through, my favorite pose is leaning back in my recliner with the TV off and my eyes closed. I have to think pretty fast though as that pose often induces sleep instead of great ideas. LOL

I've always wondered what "David" was thinking..but I'm guessing he was very vain same with "Venus D" I know I sure as heck wouldn't pose like either one of them.....
