I went back to the electronics store today and bought the cable I need to do the file transfers on the computers. There is a utility in the XP operating system that makes it pretty easy when you have the direct connect cable. There is also some software available if you want to do it that way, but it cost $69.95 so I opted to do it without investing in software I would only use once. I bought a 1 terrabyte external hard drive for the new computer too that will be used to back up her files on a regular basis. I think I will do a comnplete backup on it before I start anything else. I have a 1 Tbyte external drive on my computer too that is used just for backing up files.

Gosh Randy, 8 megabytes would not hold a minute amount of the program that is in a computer nowadays much less saving photos etc.

This is am amazing post for me ~ The only thing I recognized was $69.95 !
I guess I did get a little carried away there. I was just thinking this morning about the first computer that I bought. It's in a box somewhere here in the basement. I spent about $500 and bought a Commodore 64. But the first PC I bought had a 10 gigabyte hard drive in it. That was amazing when you consider there wasn't even a hard drive in the Commodore 64. I have had either two or three major computer problems that have been related to insufficient capacity for storing pictures, music, etc. Because of that, I am a bit paranoid about having plenty of storage and also about backing up my stored items. My computer has 900 gigabytes of storage capacity internally and a 1000 gigabyte external hard drive for backing up the information in the computer. I am pretty sure though that I use less than half of the storage space I have available.

I am a procrastinator and really need to back up my files on a consistent basis. I have a older computer that I need to transfer the files to the newer desktop but didn't want to pay for the transfer software either. I guest an external hard drive would be an excellent gift to myself.
You can also get enclosures for internal hard drives and make them an external drive. I don't know what I have any more, but I did send away a couple of hard drives to someone that needed them. They were for internal use though. And the recipient had a nephew that could so the installation for her.

oh ~ CurbieAnother thing that is so amazing is that my first PC had 8 megabytes of RAM (random access memory) and that was considered quite sufficient. The new computer I bought for my wife has 4 gigabytes of RAM (4000 megabytes). Now if my arithmetic is correct, teacher, that is 500 times more than my first one. And this new one is considered sufficient. LOL

Wow VA is close to Curbie, wish it was closer to me. I'm thinking about 10 hrs or so for me. Got to chat with Kathy, Kathryn, Debe, you and MF about coming out next yr. Kathy told me anytime would be fine for her as she will take the time off. Might have to put Kathryn on a bus up to the Portland, OR area. Posted on FB awhile ago that Kathryn and I were talking about her coming to Portland (maine randy and debe...lol)and Kathy said no for me to come out there.

Just goofing around (for a few minutes) and decided I better look in here and see what everone is up to.
I've really had my hands full here since Thanksgiving. It just seems like there isn't enough time in the day anymore.........wha' happened? Am I getting old or somethin?
I mainly wanted to tell ya'll that I talked to Herbyann, and do at least every two weeks and she is getting lonely. She remembers the Christmas's that we had together on GG and is really getting antsy to get on the internet or at least web TV so she can communicate with everyone again. Asked me to tell ya'll this:
that Herbyanne is still hoping to get online so she can join us again but she just hasn't got it all together yet. She misses the friendships we had here and would like everyone to keep praying for her. She said that something is working because she feels like she is getting much better.
Those of you who didn't know Herbyann, she was a super moderator at GG and she had a very debilitating stroke 2 years ago in September. It has been a long trip back but she is getting better and better and by her speech over the phone, you can barely tell anything ever happened to her. A year ago, she spoke so mushy mouthed that I could barely understand her speech. She repeated things and then would just stop in mid sentence and search her mind for what she was saying and then just say ohhh what was I saying, and sometimes could not pull it together to finish what she'd been telling me. She could remember very little but it's coming back to her and she seems a great deal like her old self. Now she can carry on a regular conversation again and it's a delight to talk to her on the phone. She's been through a very rough time but is quite a fighter.
To the old friends, she still has very little control of her right hand but she said she would love to receive Christmas cards.........she thinks of our old group often and wishes she could be a part of our garden family again. If you would care to get a card out to her, just PM me and I will give you her address in Ventura California. I talk to her every week or two and she's still quite a gal and has made a remarkable recovery.
Just thought I'd pass that on to ya'll.
I've been rearranging stuff in my living room to make room for a tree and would like to know who moved all this stuff in here. I know I had room for a tree last year!!!
Now I will read around this forum and see what I've been missin'. I know there's some good old stuff in here and I'm missing everything.

Now, I am NOT blond and I would call him Tigger instead of Tiger. I can see it all b/c I have this friend who is a cross between Chris Rock and Tiger Woods ~ "Big Al ~ get in the car b/c YOU have to help me with this." He is my 'adopted' son. He is a guru of computers and firefighters and photography. Anyone know where Tiger lives? This could get complicated. Where is Tigger now? see....... ~ Curbie
