I picked a tomato this evening that was not quite red all the way but I ate it anyway. It sure was tasty. I picked some sweet 100's yesterday and I am going to eat those too. I added the last cucumber I picked to our chef salad yesterday for lunch after church. I picked a handful of purplehul peas tonight about the same in jalapena peppers and 5 pods of okra. I am going to cook some butter peas tomorrow that I bought at Walmart in the freezer section and I will add my purplehull to them and get a few more pods of okra from the grocery store.
 
We had a storm come thru last and torn up several of our tomatoes. So saturday we go and buy another dozen plants and set them and sunday morning when we got up we noticed the rabbits had eaten 4 of them. We sure are having a tough time with our tom. this year. We're getting enough to eat but I hate to see them being detroyed.
 


My maters are just now starting to bloom but the first few of mine never get to ripen. Cuz I like fried green tomatoes! My mouth is watering.
 
The tomato was so tasty Maggie. I have smoked sausage in the oven to make a sandwich and I will eat the sweet 100's with it.

I haven't seen any robbits but something's eating my tomatoes off the vines. It has to be either squirrels or rabbits. Yesterday while inside my dogs were excited about something in the yard. I couldn't see anything but my grandson said he saw the grass moving, so I thought it might have been some sneaky rabbits.
 
I pulled up the tomato plants that drowned and replaced some of them yesterday. Plan to plant some more when I can get some more tomato plants.

Nothing like a garden ripened tomato.
 
Grrrr. Sunday I saw one of my surviving toms and it was just starting to blush. It was about the size of a softball . Last night , what was left was laying on the ground and looked like the skin of a softball. It was all gone except the back 1/4 of the skin. I am betting on a furry tailed rat!
 
Ok.... you guys are starting to scare me. This is my first garden in thirty years, did all kinds of stuff wrong (mainly, being impatient and planting stuff WAY too early) and have forgotten more stuff than I'll ever remember again. But.... squirrels and rabbits eating the tomatoes off the vines?!? I don't EVER remember that happening around here before. I mean rabbits eating the saplings when first planted or all of my leaf lettuce I tried to grow one year.... but TOMATOES right off the vine? I'm shakin' my head in disbelief.

I sure hope it doesn't happen to me after all I've been through with this confounded garden this year. It's been a trial of frustration that's FINALLY starting to round into shape and set fruit.
 
Have you tried making tomatoe cages out of chicken wire or 1/4" hardware cloth maybe that would keep them at bay
CRITTERS love them just not in the garden
 


John, we don't all have problems with varmints eating our produce. My biggest problems here are moles and slugs. There are deer and raccoons around but for some reason, they have never bothered my garden. I have seen a deer in my garden a couple of times when I had a pile of apples there, but she apparently was only interested in the apples.
 
LOL! Oh John, it gets even better. Birds also will attack your tomatoes! Sad but true they are the veggie of choice for many critters. I had not been having any trouble untill this last couple weeks. I looked out one day to see a squirrel running down the fence with a small tomatoe in his mouth! That's why I over plant....so I can share:D :rolleyes:

Moles versus voles ~ hm...... Slug are our problem here too. NOW, when the cat tried to eat a slug rather than a mole, it was a sad sad situation. I found it rather comical but the cat sure didn't ~ :)
 
Now, what the cats bring in have no tails. But the mice do eat under the bird feeder so once in a while, we get one of those running through our house. Am I right with my identification, Blueaussie? ~ Curbie
 
I've heard that before, Blue, but I'm not convinced. I know I have voles too though. But I have caught moles in their tunnels in my root crops. When I catch the moles, the damage stops.
 
Anybody want one of my cats? :) ~

Awww Curbie. They all look so happy with you.:D I wouldn't want to break up your family. Besides Bennie would be less than over joyed at the company
 


The cats are hunters ~ and lovers. It s bit annoying when I get a wake-up call with a live chipmunk or field mouse or a small bird in my bedroom and I'm rescueing them. My language towards the cats is very unpublishable. The other day, my husband got up to go to work and asked,"What's under that towel?" My response was: It's alive ~ don't touch it or step on it or.." By the time he came to the kitchen, he recognized the towel and said," Is it still alive? Can I see? " I am convinced that if you hold these things close to your heart, it revives them. It was a chipmunk. About an hour later, withOUT cats, it rustled and was released into the field. YEAH KayD! maters :) How's the heat and lack of rain doing? I saw Texas had rain ~ 108° in Las Vegas. THAT is tough ~ :)
