Hello! I have this wonderful Magnolia Jane bush that has been thriving for 7 years. It is still doing well, but recently I noticed these odd seemingly fungal growths on the bare stalks near its base. The growths peel off easily and don’t seem to be doing any lasting damage. However, I am worried that they might be a sign of something else more worrisome. Any ideas as to what might be going on here and what, if anything, should be done about it?

Hi Adam,
It is the the mulch you use that is the problem especially around the trunk of the tree! Black mulch is the worst! The mulch is a perfect environment for fungi to grow which damages and shortens the life of the tree.... if you are using garden fabric under the mulch this adds to the problem...remove the mulch from around your tree a couple of feet ....you can always plant a few creeping ground cover type plants.
