For the most part we have grass in our yard but there are spots here and there and i dont know why. I want to use some grass seed but I heard that there were some other methods..like putting dead grass on a dirt patch. Any help is appreciated!!

Usually when you have spots that won't grow there is some type of environmental issue such as contamination from gas or oil , or maybe weed killer , dog urine, and so on. You metioned clay earlier, is this a spot that might need a little soil added so the grass can take root. It is very hard to get grass seed to take root in clay. Adding sand or soil may help.
thanks..I keep underestimating that darn clay!!
